Genre and Iconography Preliminary Exercise

Genre and Iconography

The origins of the term "genre":

The word genre is derived from the French "genre," which means "kind," and the Latin "genus," which also means "category." The term "genre" is often used in literature as well as other forms of art, such as cinematography. The term's origins may be traced back to ancient Greek culture, when it was originally used in literature by Aristotle and Plato to categorize various styles of writing. It would be simpler to classify them for them.
The term "genre" became widespread in France in the 1770s, centuries later. The word was given more complicated connotations by the French, which varied based on the context in which it was used. To decide whether a newborn is a boy or a girl, it either signifies "genre." Furthermore, French people began to broaden the definition of the word to encompass a broader range of elements and creative forms than merely literature. Around the 1780s in France, the term "genre" was described as a "specific form of art" or "independent style" that was largely employed in paintings that emphasized aspects of daily life at the time.
Pioneers in cinematography adapted the term to filmmaking in the 1800s, after the Industrial Revolution and a slew of innovations, as the definition of the term broadened, crossed borders, and changed depending on the continent or country. "Genre" was used in cinema to classify various sorts of movies by type, in the same way that Aristotle and Plato used it to arrange literature by type. There are nine different sorts of film genres to choose from:
1- Horror
2- Science fiction
3- Drama
4- Comedy
5- Fantasy
6- Romance
7- Mystery
8- Thriller
9- Action
A film's genre is determined by a number of criteria. It might be determined by the setting, color scheme, props, and actor in a film.

What role does an actor have in determining a film's genre?
Certain performers are inextricably linked to a specific kind of film. While some performers are most known for their roles in action films, others are best known for their roles in science fiction films. Etc.

In this project, I was responsible for selecting an actor, locating four important films in which the actor appeared, and studying the many aspects related with the film genre in which the actor is most frequently seen.
