Media producers utilize symbolic codes to depth and additional to prepend profundity and supplemental denotation and/or connotation to a media text. Symbolic codes are the discernible elements in a media production. They connote meaning. They are basically the mise en scene of the movie. The followings are some instances of symbolic codes that can be found in a movie: setting/location/set design, acting, costumes, hair and make-up, color, lighting and tone etc…

I analyzed the official trailer of the VALERIAN movie, stating some of the different genre use. Preparatory to that here is a brief synopsis of the trailer:

In the 28th century, special operatives Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline work together to maintain order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the minister of defense, the duo embarks on a mission to Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis where diverse species gather to share knowledge and culture. When a dark force threatens the peaceful city, Valerian and Laureline must race against time to identify the menace that also jeopardizes the future of the universe.

I have identified the genres of this particular movie as Science fiction, action, fantasy, adventure, from which I can infer that this movie is more of a fantasy than a realistic movie. There are magical worlds out there with advanced technology, aliens, robots, and time travel. These worlds exist out of the corner of your eye, on the fringes of reality. They're part of what defines the science fiction genre, and they're what we are to talk about in our blog post today. The first film categorized as science fiction was Le Voyage dans la Lune (1902) by George Méliès, telling the story of a spacecraft being launched to the moon in a large cannon. The special effects used in the film paved the way for future sci-fi films and became very popular after its release.
