Group Efforts: After discussing and analyzing the film opening of the GIVER,
GM&T Universal Production, rather than having specific assigned tasked to
each member, we discussed, and answered each question as a group. If there is
a part that a member does not understand a concept, we did our best to help
out. -Planning in Film Activity 1: Film Opening Conventions and

What is the purpose of editing in a film? |
||||

Define
continuity: In editing, continuity refers to an editing structure used to
maintain and perpetuate consistency in order to create a sense of time and
place in the movie. Further, continuity in editing, helps the audience to
connect to the reality projected in the film, while instituting a coherent
and organized narrative. The principal purpose of continuity in editing is to
make the different procedures used to edit the film invisible, to help the
audience to not notice or to disperse the belief that it was edited.

Conventions of a
Film Opening and Narrative Structure |
||||
Film
Opening Conventions: Document the conventions of a film opening. E.g.,
Production company, titles, etc. |
||||
The name of the production company appears at the very beginning of
the film opening. Then, a small clip withing the film opening established the
complete name of the production company instead of just the Initials. After
the short animated clip, there is a
short narrative that gives a little information about what reality will be
projected in the movie. This small description introduces the viewer of the
movie to the main content of the movie, therefore establishing a quick
understanding of what the movie will be about. With a drone shot combined
with an establishing shot, the director introduces the principal place where
the event in the movie occurs. While the director keeps track of the
establishing shot, we hear the narrator’s voice, that describes how the
society where he lives in is. For each element that he mentions, the director
uses a different shot size, frame, camera angle to illustrate what is being
said. For instance, when the narrator explained that in this society a
specific language was required, a wide shot was used to show how students
interact with each other. Moreover, when the narrator kept on elaborating how
it was mandatory to take medication, an insert shot was used to show a hand
pressed on a machine that was automatically implementing the medication in
the hand of the character whose hand was shown. As the narrator maintains his
narrative with a slow dolly in and zoom in, we gradually see the main
character. That is when the audience that the boy shown in the film opening
is the voice over. After the main character was revealed, the name of the
movie appears again. After, a master
shot was used to fully show him and his two best friends, as they are happily
heading to the school that they attend. |
||||
What is Exposition
and list techniques used to establish the world of a film? |
||||
Exposition is when a description or explanation is brought to an
idea. In other words, this is a way that directors can give background
information. Some techniques in exposition in film is show not tell, make it
funny, do not tell use questions, and keep it short. |

Beat I: The Opening Image |
A visual image that represents the central struggle & tone of
the story. ·
A snapshot of the main
character's problem before the adventure begins. ·
It sets the tone, mood,
genre, and setting of the movie.
|
|||
Document the
setting, location (inside-outside), genre, theme, tone, the mood of the film.
It includes narrative elements such as text, voice-over, etc. |
The
opening image below is the result of an establishing shot combined to a drone
shot. The image below shows the main setting where the narrative of the film
takes place. The main lighting of the movie is low key lighting. Because of
the low-key lighting is contrasted to the gray color, the tone of the movie is
sad. Also the gray color of the movie symbolizes death, decay and repentance.
Death because at the beginning of the film opening, not only there is
storylines describing which even has generated the potential creation of this
new society. Also, the narrative texts proclaimed that after the disaster,
everybody’s memory was erased. Further,
the narrator also talks about how a disaster led to the creation of a new
society that was totally controlled. Specific clothing style were assigned,
morning medication were mandatory, etc. This little information advances the
plot of the movie, because it encourages the audience to be more engage and
understand more the narrative of the FILM.

|
||||
Describe
Beat II |
Beat II From THE GIVER reveals
a lot of things about the world where Jonas is living in. In the first image,
the audience sees two children playing, and on this same image there is a
story line that says: ‘’ wear your assigned clothes.’’ Already this line
reveals that the whole society is controlled by something or somebody. Moreover,
the hook line does not even apply how people are asked to wear they clothes
as a request, but more like an order. The words “ Wear’’. ‘’your’’.
‘’assigned’’, also shows how people are being controlled, and also how they have
to obey, or they probably might be pusnished. Also, in the second picture, it
shows how the area they are living on, has a defined geometrical shape. This
reveals that the way that the city is built followed a pecific pattern
assigned by what is in control. As Jonas describes in the movie that he is
still looking for his purpose in this world, he also asks a question at the
end, where he Is asking the audience if he thinks that he should apologize
for what he did. As the main character asks this question that creates
suspens, the audience might assume that the main character who has unique
ability is going to be the one freeing the nation under the dictatorship they
are under. |
|||
Beat III: The Set-Up |
Introduction of the main characters in the film and an expansion of
the opening image. ·
Present the main character's
world as it is, and what is missing in their life revealed.
|
|||
Describe
Beat III |
In this master shot, we can
fully see the protagonist and main character Jonas, alongside his two
friends. Although they all seem to be happy because they are near each other,
and have each others friendship, they are all live in the same fade word
dominated by dictatorship. Also, although they are all laughing, the low key
lighting and black and white color symbolizes how truly unhappy, lonely they
are, or even feel like they do not have their freedom. Also, this picture
also demonstrates how strong the friendship between all three characters is. |
|||
|
||||
Beat IV: Catalyst |
A
life-changing event that causes a significant change in the main character's
life. • A moment
where the opportunity to go on a journey is presented to the main character. • Life as
it is, is changing. |
|||
Describe Beat IV |
In filmmaking, a catalyst is defined as a special event that
encourages the main character to act, which eventually contributes to the
coherent development of the plot. The catalyst can be the death of a person,
a disaster, a certain feeling that the
character develops in himself. In the world where the character is living
everything has a uniform presentation: All the building has the exact same
structure and color. There is no diversity in the composition, everything
follows a specific pattern. In this images taken from the from THE GIVER, the
audience can see confusion drawn on the character’s face. In this scene,
Jonas describes how he always felt that he was special and unique. He claims
that he had the ability to see things that he belived other could not see or
understand. Although there were no color in the world he was living in,
unlike the other livings, he was able to see colors, as in this scene he
seemed to be amazed by the color of the leaves on the trees that he was
seeing. However, He also explains that he was always scared to tell others,
because he feared that this uniqueness in hm, would get in him in danger.
Therefor, the catalyst here is his ability to see colors while others can’t. |

The shots are consecutves and goes in that particular order to create
unconscious peace of mind after the audience’s unconscious assumptions. It
works to convey the order, duration, and frequency of the actions. |
|
|||
At the
very moment that this scene occurs the audience will be quick to infer or
assume the location of the action. They will just assume since the the two
shot are consecutives. |

The shot’s durations varied in seconds, as same duration or long duration
would slow down the tempo. The gradual lengthening of the shot create slow
tempo illusion. |

This
relationship between each shot creates a discernable pattern. |
